Return of the Westland Petrel Festival!
We are very excited to announce the third Return of the Westland Petrel Festival!
The third event is going to be even better than before with great bands, local talent, tree planting, craft markets, food, clowns, drummers and more.
All money made will be going to projects to help the birds succeed.
Come for a great weekend, meet new friends, listen to great music and see what Punakaiki has to offer.
Friday 28th April 2017
4:30pm: The annual return of the birds will be in full swing, so we open the festival with a walk along the beach starting from McMillians Rd, just south of Punakaiki. This will be approx 1.5km and a horse and carriage ride will be available for those who find it a little far.
7pm: The now famous Pancake Rocks Cafe open mic night, where all musicians are welcome to come along and show off their skills! Great food and drink will be available.
Saturday 29th April
10am-12pm: Planting morning up into the valley above where the birds live at the Punakaiki Coastal Restoration Project - trees make an easy stress-free journey for the Westland Petrel returning home to nest. Parking available at the project site – 3916 State Highway 6. A combined presentation from OSPRI and the Department of Conservation will allow planters to learn about how pest control benefits the TBfree programme and the important role it plays in protecting our native species from predators such as stoats, rats and possums.
10am: Local market in front of the Pancake Rocks Cafe with food stalls and local arts and crafts.
2pm-4:30pm: Children’s afternoon at the Punakaiki Beach Camp. The great Carrot and Pickle the Clowns will be performing, bouncy castle and horse & wagon rides for kids and parents to hang out and have fun.
3pm-Late: Our Petrel Festival evening entertainment includes Knights of the Dub table (Hamilton) and Lost Demos (Auckland) Leap Frog (Barrytown), Fox River Crew (Fox River), Runaway (Westport), and Vices (Dunedin). Food stalls, braziers, get your dancing moves ready and come along for a great time.
