Hokitika’s Junk2Funk, national event spans the whole weekend from 2-3 April 2022.
After 10 years, Hokitika’s Junk2Funk event is a national event spanning the whole weekend from 2-3 April 2022. Event producer Claire O’Connell, a Hokitika-based costume and prop designer and former World of Wearable Arts (WOW) winner, is opening the grassroots recycled fashion challenge to entrants from across New Zealand for the first time.
Ms O’Connell says Hokitika was well placed to host its own annual wearable arts competition attracting entrants, finalists and visitors from all over New Zealand.
“We want to bring talent to Hokitika and have shaped Junk2Funk into a weekend celebration of
sustainability and community which are at the heart of the event” says Ms O’Connell. Known for its
eclectic events and creative community, the date was planned to wrap up Hokitika’s summer of
events including the Driftwood and Sand and Hokitika Wildfoods Festival’s.
“Junk2Funk is open to all designers and we want to encourage young emerging designers to see the event as an opportunity to showcase their talents and love of wearable art” says Ms O’Connell.
‘‘One of our main missions is to inspire youth in wearable art, design development, concept and creation. Their minds are demanded by all they see in social media, we want to encourage and inspire them to create 3D wearable art”
There are six sections to enter offering a brief for every creative, including the under 12's.
The requirement for each entry is a 75% recyclable component.
