Special Olympics West Coast will be taking a team to National Games in Hamilton in December 2021, competing in basketball and swimming.
This is a huge financial undertaking for an isolated community with a small population base to help provide assistance and reach our goals. Our team of 13 athletes will be participating in Basketball and Swimming events in the 5-day Special Olympics National Games in Hamilton. This will be the first time we will attend a National Event and we are very excited to participate.
Special Olympics provides a huge social and sporting benefit for our athletes and the subsequent growth in each individual, is immeasurable.
The West Coast team is a relatively new club that has only been active for 5 years. We have weekly practices with coaches who help the athletes reach their goals and work on skills. Special Olympics training is very much a social event too where people can socialize, make friends, have fun and learn many life skills along the way. Mixing and working in a team, setting and achieving goals, being resilient, problem solving, being organized and enthusiastic are all skills the athletes are experiencing and transferring into other aspects of their lives. Physically, it is important to keep active, work on fitness, and work on healthy eating and exercise as a normal part of the athlete's lives.
We are seeking support to help us fund some of the expenses. In general, it costs around $1300 per athlete to attend, and additional costs of the team managers and coaches so we need a total of more than $24,000. We are actively fundraising in our local community and each athlete is dedicated to supporting the team. They are on a limited benefit so their budgets are tight.
If you are keen to make a social and physical difference to this keen team of Special Olympians we will be very grateful. Support them to make their dreams come true!
