As the focus of tourism all over the world is changing it is important that NZ tourism businesses are actively working towards a more regenerative future – and sharing these stories with both locals and visitors.
TIA has taken the key step to elevate the urgency for the tourism industry to act to reduce its carbon emissions towards becoming a net zero-carbon industry, and to get there sooner than the government’s goal of a carbon zero New Zealand by 2050.
The vehicle for this work, the Tourism Carbon Challenge, was launched in November 2021. TIA is developing the Action Plan for determining the priority things that we will do across the industry for getting there.
Gisela Purcell, Sustainability Advocate, TIA - Gisela works at a national level to help ensure that tourism is beneficial for NZ’s communities and the environment.
She led the creation of NZ’s first fully certified, zero carbon holiday itinerary in Nelson Tasman, and was named an “Eco-Luminary” of the Global Travel Industry by The Australian in 2021.
Having owned her own business for 12 years, Gisela can relate well to the challenges and pressures facing small business owners. She has an MA in international development, a certificate in Regenerative Tourism and a Professional Certificate in Sustainable Tourism from the Global Sustainable Tourism Council.
She loves cycle touring and has ridden several Great Rides and rode the length of the South Island last summer.
