The township of Fox Glacier is just a scenic 30-minute drive south from Franz Josef, and like its neighbour is a great place for a unique glacier experience. Fox Glacier Guiding offer a variety of adventures on the ice and in 2021 was awarded TripAdvisor’s #1 Out of the Ordinary Experience in the World! A range of helicopter scenic flights are also available in Fox Glacier.
When visiting Fox Glacier make sure to visit Lake Matheson, famous for its mirror-like reflections of the Southern Alps. Or, if you’re looking for a longer walk, the newly built Lake Gault Track (3hr return) also offers stunning lake and mountain views. A variety of short rainforest walks are also available in Fox Glacier, including a chance to see glow worms on the Minnehaha Track for those that stay the night. (Tip: remember to take a torch)!
For mountain bikers, the Te Weheka cycleway provides a lovely ride through the rainforest and connects with the Fox Glacier South Side track to a viewpoint of the glacier. E-bike hire and tours are also available from Fox Glacier Guiding.
There is a good variety of accommodation available in Fox Glacier, and for those that do stay, the sunset views from the Fox Glacier Viewpoint (on Cook Flat Road) or Gillespies Beach are spectacular.
