Although the glacier has been steadily retreating over the last 20-years, you can still experience a close encounter by doing a heli-hike or scenic flight .

For experienced hikers, a full day walk on the Roberts Point or Alex Knob track rewards you with breath-taking views of the glacier.

For adventure-seekers, Franz Josef offers the chance to skydive over the Southern Alps with views of Aoraki Mount Cook, you can take a quad bike tour through ancient rainforests or go paddle boarding on the tranquil waters of Lake Mapourika.

Franz Josef is also a great place to relax and unwind. Visit Waiho Hot Tubs and immerse yourself in the surrounding rainforest, take a leisurely lake cruise and fishing tour, visit the West Coast Wildlife Centre to learn about the kiwi recovery project or simply chill out at one of the town’s cafes and restaurants.
