A group of key Chinese Inbound Tour Operators recently embarked on an immersive famil to experience the awe-inspiring landscapes and cultural heritage of New Zealand’s West Coast.
The journey began with a spectacular TranzAlpine Scenic Plus train ride, showcasing the majestic Southern Alps. Upon arrival, the group enjoyed a site inspection at Hotel Lake Brunner, followed by an interactive gold panning experience at Shantytown Heritage Park, immersing themselves in the region’s gold rush history.
The ITOs delved into Māori culture at the Pounamu Pathway in Greymouth, learning about the significance of pounamu to the local Ngāi Tahu people. They then visited the famous Pancake Rocks and Blowholes in Punakaiki, a real wonder along the wild West Coast. That evening, the group attended an industry dinner at the Scenic Hotel Punakaiki, where they connected with local operators and Development West Coast staff. The dinner provided a valuable opportunity for both sides to establish relationships, which was greatly appreciated by all.
One of the highlights of the famil was the Twin Glacier Scenic Flight in Franz Josef, offering breathtaking aerial views of the Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers. Although the Fox Glacier Heli Hike was cancelled due to weather, the scenic flight left the ITOs in awe of the region’s glacier country. The group also visited the West Coast Wildlife Centre, where they were introduced to the rare rowi kiwi, New Zealand’s rarest kiwi species. Following this, they embarked on an exhilarating Off-Road Quad Bike Adventure with Franz Josef Wilderness Tours.
A scenic cruise and nature walk on Lake Mapourika followed, where they explored a pristine rainforest, which provided exclusive access to a pristine private rainforest trail. That evening, they gathered for another industry dinner at the luxurious Te Waonui Forest Retreat, strengthening ties with local operators, further solidifying partnerships for future collaborations.
While the planned Hokitika Gorge Walk was cancelled due to weather, the group had a delightful experience at the Hokitika Sandwich Company, where the ITOs thoroughly enjoyed the freshly made sandwiches, a highlight of their Hokitika visit. They also visited the National Kiwi Centre, where they had a hands-on, interactive experience with native wildlife, including feeding giant eels and observing kiwi in their nocturnal habitat.
Although the scheduled flight from Hokitika to Christchurch was cancelled due to weather, the ITOs left the West Coast with lasting memories of its unique landscapes, rich culture, and warm hospitality. This famil provided the ITOs with invaluable firsthand knowledge, allowing them to create compelling and authentic travel experiences for Chinese visitors eager to explore New Zealand’s West Coast.
