Get to know the Buller District candidates for Development West Coast at the 2025 local elections.
Lee Harris
My focus is on growing Buller sustainably and responsibly. I have governance experience. My background is in economic development, media, communications, public relations and community – the past 12 years or so on the Coast.
I’m keen to make Buller better, and to that end I’m part of the Promoting Buller group – we’re wanting to let people know what our district has to offer, and to make the right connections to see our people old and new thrive. We need more residents, more businesses, more investment. We’ve got a heap of things to sort out infrastructure-wise, and having a bigger rating base will help that.
At DWC board level, we need to be strategising broadly, opening ourselves to new ideas, ensuring our supporting infrastructure is inviting to newcomers, and thinking about the legacy we’re leaving for future generations.

Blurb to come.
Garry Howard
If elected to Development West Coast Trust, my priorities centre on building a sustainable, diversified economy that benefits current and future generations.
My primary focus will be growing local skills and talent through trade apprenticeships, Co-starters business development, and directorship training. These programmes build our homegrown capability.
I'm committed to strategic partnerships with proven operators who can leverage part of our $150 million fund to attract additional investment. Current primary industries need to be encouraged to add value prior to exporting resources off the West Coast. Every decision will be based on thorough research and sound business principles.
Emerging opportunities like carbon credits, sustainable tourism, and IT development offer exciting diversification potential alongside our traditional strengths.
As a trustee, I'll never forget these funds belong to West Coast residents. My approach combines strong business acumen with genuine community commitment – listening carefully, asking tough questions, and making evidence-based decisions that create lasting prosperity for our region.
