Katie and Dean Shannon said the book was about more than just dog training.
“This is a quintessential, simply written and light-hearted book about having a dog in your life. From the initial point of considering getting a dog, right through to the final farewelling of your dog, It’s Not the Dog We’re Training guides you through every aspect of having a dog in your life.”
“This book is written for people who want to know about dogs, and is a testament to the power of love. It includes heart-wrenching stories, beautiful hand drawn sketches, fun-filled cartoons and information on successful praise-based teaching.”
Katie dedicated her life to dogs after a tragic event in her childhood. Along with her husband, she has grabbed every opportunity to better the lives of the dogs around them. For the past two decades, based out of their Kaiata property Rainwater Homestead, they have been actively involved in the welfare of dogs by running the empathy-based cat and dog boarding facility.
They have also run regular basic dog obedience courses in the community, worked with aggressive dogs, assessed therapy dogs, welcomed new readers to a weekly reading with dog programme at the Grey District Library, and conducted community dog walks. The couple have also been involved in fostering and rehoming orphan dogs (as well as fostering teenagers) and working therapy dogs.
