Development West Coast (DWC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Andrew Aitken as the new Destination and Tourism Manager, commencing 23 September.

Aitken brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the role, with a strong background in tourism development, strategic planning, and community engagement. Experienced in the tourism and hospitality industry, he has held various leadership positions with Air New Zealand, Skyline and Ngāi Tahu Tourism.

He will be responsible for leading initiatives that enhance the West Coast’s tourism offerings, fostering sustainable tourism growth, and strengthening the region’s brand presence in the competitive tourism market.

"The West Coast is an incredibly unique destination, and I’m excited to join the team to further develop and highlight all that the region has to offer domestic and international visitors,” Aitken said.

He will work closely with local businesses, stakeholders, and government bodies to ensure the West Coast remains a vibrant and attractive destination.

Aitken takes over from Patrick Dault, who will be stepping down at the beginning of September after four years in the role.

DWC Economic Development Manager Jo Birnie said Patrick has been instrumental in driving several key initiatives for the region, and Andrew is set to build on this solid foundation.

“We are thrilled to welcome Andrew to the team,” Birnie said. “His extensive knowledge and proven track record in tourism management will be invaluable as we continue to work to elevate the West Coast’s profile and drive economic growth through tourism. We are confident that under his leadership, our region will continue to thrive as a top destination.”

The latest data from Infometrics showed the West Coast leading New Zealand in visitor spending growth for the year to June 2024. Total visitor expenditure in the region was up by 11.9% ($55m), outpacing the national average of 1.8%.
