Each year, DWC is proud to support four outstanding West Coasters, empowering them to pursue their tertiary education goals and build strong foundations for their future careers. These scholarships reflect DWC’s commitment to investing in the region’s people and inspiring the next generation of leaders, innovators, and change-makers.
“We’re focused on keeping and growing our local talent, encouraging skilled graduates to return to the Coast, helping businesses find the people they need,” says Heath Milne, Chief Executive of DWC. “We’re looking forward to seeing this year’s applicants and hearing about their aspirations.”
The scholarships aim to reduce financial barriers and allow students to focus on achieving academic results and personal growth. Each scholarship recipient joins a growing network of talented young Coasters making a difference in their communities and beyond.
Prospective applicants are encouraged to start preparing their submissions now and make the most of available resources to ensure their applications stand out. Eligibility criteria and application information will be available on the DWC website.
“It’s a real privilege to work alongside our scholarship recipients,” says Jade Mahuika, Project Manager at DWC. “DWC currently supports 16 students, which will grow to 20 this year. These young people astound me — they’ve become amazing ambassadors for the Coast. Their stories are helping to change perceptions and show that there are real opportunities here for our rangatahi. I would encourage anyone entering tertiary studies for the first time to apply.”
One of last year’s recipients, Elyse Johnson, a Buller High School graduate, says the scholarship has made a meaningful difference to her journey:
“This scholarship has lifted a huge financial burden, allowing me to focus fully on my studies. I’m passionate about understanding people and supporting their wellbeing, and through studying Psychology and Human Resources, I aim to make a meaningful impact on mental health and workplace culture.”
DWC's annual scholarships, valued at up to $32,500 per student, offer summer work placements and guaranteed employment on the West Coast upon graduation.
Applications open: Monday, 4 August 2025
