Development West Coast (DWC) celebrated success at the Economic Development New Zealand (EDNZ) Awards, held last night in Dunedin, taking home the 'Best Practice for Sector and Cluster Development Award' for Te Tai Poutini Nature Economy Project.

The EDNZ Awards celebrate excellence in economic development across New Zealand. This annual event brings together industry leaders and stakeholders to recognise and honour outstanding contributions and achievements in economic development.

DWC was also recognised as a finalist in two other categories: ‘Inclusive Development & Wellbeing’ for the Development West Coast Tertiary Scholarship and internship programme, and 'Innovative Use of Technology' for the West Coast Wikipedian at Large Project.

The Nature Economy project, led by Zak Shaw, focuses on diversifying the West Coast’s economy through conservation efforts, environmental restoration, and protecting native biodiversity.

“Acknowledgement from EDNZ that the project is innovative and having significant impact within our region, sits pretty well," Shaw said.

"In my view the project's successes to date stem from DWC’s forward thinking and various partnerships that have been created between businesses, trusts, landowners, community groups, organisations and education providers.

"Something I have noticed as a common thread across West Coast communities is that nature and the environment in which we live has a significant role in shaping our communities, people’s identity and their connection to place.

"Because that connection is so strong, engaging people in conversations which involve regenerating our environment and supporting the health of our communities hasn’t proved to be a significant challenge.

"Continuing to invest in the health of our regions natural asset in my view will bring enduring benefits and significant opportunities in the long term," he added.
