As part of the partnership, Lucas will take on the role of general manager of the eatery, with the aim of providing Ngāti Waewae with a fully supported, long-term ownership model. The collaboration leverages Emily’s 30-year, award-winning hospitality career to establish a world-class operation from day one.
Amanda Downs, general manager of Arahura Holdings and Te Ara Pounamu, says “The operational model is built on keeping employment local and establishing business partnerships within the Buller district, initially contracting supply from and supporting the growth of two well-known local businesses with the view to create a five-star visitor experience with an authentic West Coast offering.”
Signature cabinet items such as the chicken kumara hāngi pie, pork and watercress pie, and horopito peppered steak sandwich will take centre stage, alongside favourites like fry bread. These offerings will showcase local flavours and contribute to The Paparoa eatery’s role in the overall cultural journey of the Punangairi Visitor Centre.
A signature blend of coffee will be supplied by local roastery Kawatiri Coffee, further enhancing the West Coast experience.
Punangairi site manager Sheryl Tuhi says, “The team at the visitor centre are very excited about the quality of product and standard of service the new eatery will offer to travellers visiting the West Coast and of course the immediate and wider Punakaiki community. The whole visitor centre experience is fast developing into a world class-destination for the West Coast that we are all very proud of.”
The Paparoa is set to open its doors in October, bringing a unique cultural and culinary experience to both locals and visitors.
