The northern West Coast has left a lasting impression on nine inbound tour operators (IBOs) who took part in a Development West Coast (DWC) famil last month designed to boost tourism in the Buller district.

The five-day ‘Northern West Coast Discovery Famil’ took the group through Greymouth, Punakaiki, Westport, Karamea and Maruia, showcasing everything from ancient underground caves and coastal cycle trails to boutique accommodation and world-class food.

Hosted by DWC’s Tourism and Events Executive Lara Thomas, the famil aimed to give travel sellers first-hand experience of the region’s unique tourism offerings.

“These agents are the link between our operators and international visitors,” she said. “Once they’ve experienced a product for themselves, it’s far easier for them to sell it.”

The group began their journey in Christchurch before boarding the TranzAlpine Train to Moana, experiencing a dramatic change in weather – from rain and snow in the Southern Alps to a clear, sunny day at Lake Brunner.

Highlights of the trip included underworld rafting with Underworld Adventures, sampling Little Biddy Gin at Reefton Distilling Co. and beer tasting at Shortjaw Brewery, exploring the Honeycomb Hill Caves in Karamea, and relaxing at Maruia Hot Springs. Agents also conducted inspections of accommodation providers and enjoyed meals at iconic West Coast establishments including The Denniston Dog, The Dutch Oven Bakery and The West Coast Pie Co.

Thomas said many stops were lesser-known gems that offered an authentic West Coast experience.

“We as Coasters know these places, but for many of these agents – particularly those from Australia – it was their first time in the region. That’s why these famils are so valuable.”

“For me, it’s remembering that this is often their first time to the West Coast – it’s about showcasing product, ensuring that everyone has an amazing experience, and leaving a lasting impression,” Thomas added. “One that they will remember so the West Coast stays top of mind when making bookings for the next season.”

Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive.

"I already thought the West Coast was an amazing place, but now experiencing the north, further than I'd been before, the whole region really deserves to be seen by everyone!" one agent commented.

Another added the northern part of the Coast is remarkable. “We don’t sell enough of it, and I’ll definitely be encouraging more of our clients to go there.”
