This year’s DWC scholarship recipients, Antonia McDonnell, Oliver Wieblitz, Maddison Scanlon, and Cameron Klempel, were recognised for their academic excellence, leadership qualities, and commitment to their communities. Each will receive a scholarship valued at up to $32,500, which provides financial support throughout their studies, summer work placements, and a guaranteed job on the West Coast upon graduation.
DWC chief executive Heath Milne said the scholarships continue to play an important role in retaining and developing the region’s talent.
“These young people are of an incredibly high calibre, and each one of them has a clear vision to return and contribute to our region. We are proud to support them on their journeys, and look forward to welcoming them back to the Coast in the years ahead,"
DWC project manager Jade Mahuika, who has worked closely with scholarship students since the programme began, said the initiative was making a real difference.
“Currently, we have 16 students studying and working with support from DWC, and with this year’s recipients that number grows to 20. The skills, energy, and passion they will bring back to the Coast is something we can all be proud of,” she said.
The 2026 round attracted a record 47 applications, reflecting both the depth of talent on the Coast and the growing recognition of the scholarship programme’s value.
Among this year’s recipients:
Antonia McDonnell will study Health Science (Medicine) at the University of Otago, aspiring to return as a future doctor.
Oliver Wieblitz is pursuing a Bachelor of Physiotherapy at the University of Otago, with the goal of strengthening local health services.
Maddison Scanlon, an academic leader and prefect at Buller High School, is beginning a Bachelor of Nursing at Ara with the aim of becoming an emergency nurse and returning home to support Coast healthcare.
Cameron Klempel is studying Electrical and Electronic Engineering with Honours at the University of Canterbury, inspired by renewable energy and determined to contribute his expertise to the region’s future.
The evening also included a presentation of the Westland Mineral Sands scholarship, established in 2023 and offered every two years. The WMS scholarship was awarded to Benjamin Ritchie, who will be studying a Bachelor of Science in Geology at the University of Canterbury.
DWC chair Renee Rooney, who is standing down at the upcoming local elections after nine years of service, attended her final scholarship ceremony in the role. She was warmly acknowledged for her leadership and advocacy, and the instrumental role she has played championing the scholarship programme.
