Each year, DWC offers four scholarships to first time tertiary students valued up to $32,500 per student over the three to four years of study.
Greymouth High graduate Zoe Double, one of the 2023 scholarship recipients, is currently studying at Lincoln University.
“Gaining a degree in environmental science is allowing me to integrate sustainability with long-established industries on the West Coast such as mining and agriculture,” she said.
Molly Williams from Moana is studying at Massey University with support from her 2023 DWC scholarship.
Studying veterinary science has grown my passion for this industry, and I'm excited to contribute back and make a meaningful impact on the West Coast's community.
2024 scholarship recipient, Jack Dennehy-Coles from Whataroa, is pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce, Agriculture and Professional Accounting at Lincoln University. "Agriculture is an industry that I am extremely passionate about and has been a key driver of the West Coast's economy. The support of DWC will allow me to gain skills needed to ensure that this will remain so into the future,” he added.
Aspiring doctor and Greymouth High graduate, Cameron Dickey, is studying Health Sciences at Otago University to pursue medicine.
This scholarship allows me to worry less about the financial burden of tertiary education and put more energy into study, whilst ultimately helping me towards my goals for Māori and rural healthcare in my community.
The DWC Tertiary Scholarships aim to cultivate and retain talented West Coast youth by eliminating barriers to training and employment.
Each scholarship offers more than financial aid. Recipients also receive summer work opportunities and a guaranteed job in the West Coast after completing their tertiary education, ensuring a bright future for both the students and the region.
Scholarship applications close at 12 noon on Monday, 2 September 2024. For more information see: www.westcoast.co.nz/scholarships
