The ‘Untamed Playground’ trade famil, hosted by Development West Coast (DWC), was the second in a winter series, following an earlier Buller-focused trip. The itinerary spanned from Greymouth to Hokitika, Franz Josef, and Fox Glacier, with a jam-packed schedule designed to highlight the variety of experiences on offer for all ages.
The itinerary featured everything from guided nature tours and glacier hikes to off-roading, ziplining, kayaking, wildlife encounters, and hot tub relaxation — offering agents a taste of the region’s diversity and adventure.
Feedback from participating agents was overwhelmingly positive, with one describing the Coast as “more than just a stop on a map – it’s an experience that stays with you long after you’ve left.”
DWC Tourism and Events Executive Lara Thomas said local tourism operators went the extra mile to welcome the group.
“Our operators went above and beyond to make everyone feel welcomed and extra special on this trip, this certainly didn’t go unnoticed,” she said.
Agents also praised the warmth and hospitality of the region, with one noting: “The biggest thing was the personality and service all suppliers brought – everyone had a smile on their face.”
A standout moment for many was the Fly Six Glaciers tour with Precision Helicopters. The strong feedback from agents is expected to translate into future bookings — a great outcome for the operator and the wider region.
While the agents catered to a mix of client markets, a common theme emerged — a clear and growing demand for high-end and luxury accommodation on the West Coast. Despite the region’s diverse offerings, this is a segment the region struggles to cater for, with similar feedback regularly surfacing at trade events, famils, and through direct travel agent enquiries.
A networking event at Betsey Jane Eatery in Fox Glacier was another highlight, helping to strengthen relationships between agents and local operators.
The group arrived via the iconic TranzAlpine train from Christchurch to Greymouth, were guided throughout the journey by Hokitika Scenic Tours, and concluded the trip with a flight from Hokitika back to Christchurch – highlighting the region’s connectivity.
