Three West Coast organisations have been recognised among the country’s best, named finalists in the 2025 New Zealand Tourism Awards.

Tourism Industry Aotearoa (TIA) has named the 2025 finalists after receiving a record 150 entries, up 25 percent on last year. Winners will be announced at a gala dinner in October at Tākina Wellington Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Franz Josef Glacier Guides (FJGG) is a finalist in the Visitor Experience Award, recognised for its innovative Tiaki Trail, which turns a simple process into an engaging journey that helps visitors connect more deeply with the glacier environment.

Franz Josef Wilderness Tours has been shortlisted for the Tourism Talent Employer of Choice Award. Judges commended the family-owned business for its strong workplace culture and hands-on mentoring. From its beginnings as a small kayak operator, the company now offers quad bike adventures, rainforest experiences, and boat cruises, all while investing heavily in its staff and community.

Also in the spotlight is the Ōkārito Plant Project, a collaboration between local tourism operators, landowners, the Ōkārito Native Plants Trust, and Development West Coast’s Nature Economy Project. The initiative, which is a finalist in the Tourism Collaboration Award, is restoring biodiversity in South Westland while demonstrating how regenerative tourism can benefit both communities and nature. Judges praised the project’s grassroots approach and strong environmental outcomes.

Development West Coast’s Destination and Tourism Manager, Andrew Aitken, said the three nominations showed the region was punching well above its weight on the national stage.

“Having three finalists proves the Coast can stand proudly alongside the very best in the country. It’s a reflection of the innovation, determination and community spirit that drives our tourism operators.”
