Additionally, we've integrated a new pre-check-in system, enabling our manuhiri to complete medical and risk disclosures before arrival, streamlining the adventure right from the start.

Wilderness Lodge Lake Moeraki
Spring 2024 Tawaki/Fiordland Crested Penguin Viewing Season
In mid-September each year Tawaki/Fiordland Crested Penguin, third rarest of the world’s 18 penguin species and the only rainforest breeding penguin, hatch their eggs. They breed in coastal rainforest in the remote south-west of New Zealand’s South Island.
From late September onwards Nature Guides from Wilderness Lodge Lake Moeraki lead rainforest discovery half-day trips for Lodge guests to sit quietly in our Open Hide. Here we watch and photograph large Tawaki Penguins walking between the Tasman Sea and their rainforest nests. It is a unique and very special wildlife experience. Over the 35 years that the Wilderness Lodge has been guiding Tawaki Penguin Discovery trips, the numbers of penguins breeding at this monitored site have tripled from 30 to nearly 100 pairs (200 birds + chicks). This is about 3% of their world population.

Meet Jen Williams – 5th generation West Coaster, and the new Base Manager for Inflite Franz & Fox Helicopters.
Jen is a proud Franz Josef local who loves exploring her epic backyard with her husband, 2 children, 2 cats, 2 dogs, 6 horses, and menagerie of farm animals. Jen began working in tourism and aviation on the West Coast in 1999 and has since enjoyed various roles across the region, in between travelling the globe, and raising children.
She’s pumped to be working with Inflite Franz and Fox Helicopters as she adores the aviation industry and the shifting variables it offers. Jen finds particular joy in connecting with new people and gets an extra buzz from introducing visitors to the wonders of the West Coast, sending them on the experience of a lifetime, and making sure they walk away with a massive smile on their face.
