Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency will be closing SH73, the Arthur’s Pass route linking the West Coast and Canterbury early in September for around six weeks.
Due to debris clearing and slip repair works, this section of road will be closed in both directions every weekday between 9am and 5pm with the road reopening every hour on the hour. Road users should continue to expect DELAYS of up to an hour through this route. The road will remain OPEN overnight weekdays, and fully open weekends. Plan your journey accordingly allowing extra time for travel.

Detour Route:
During the closures, detour via SH7 Lewis Pass or wait for road to reopen every hour during the daytime closures from Tuesday 10th September. Please note this detour will add approximately 40 minutes to your journey if traveling between Greymouth and Christchurch.
