It depends on how much you want to see and which way you are traveling from.

We recommend at least 3 nights, but 5+ days if you want to explore all the way from Haast to Karamea or vice versa.

This is our best-kept secret! We do get a lot of rain, but it usually comes in heavy bursts. The region actually has more sunny days than many other parts of New Zealand! Our weather is also a lot more settled in the winter months, offering more sunshine. In contrast, spring tends to be quite wet, especially during 'Whitebait Season'.
Plus, none of the West Coast’s natural wonders would exist without the rain. And since the region stretches 600 km from north to south, the weather can vary significantly.
Self-drive is the best way to experience as much as possible. You can rent a car at Hokitika Airport or Greymouth train station or drive from other parts of the country.
If you would like someone else to do the driving, we also have tour operators like Hokitika Scenic Tours and Explore West Coast offering tours around the West Coast.

All our wonders, including the glaciers, are accessible year-round! However, summer, from December to February, is the busiest season, attracting visitors eager to explore the stunning landscapes and partake in outdoor activities.
The Northern West Coast, including Karamea, enjoys a subtropical microclimate, providing warmer temperatures and lush vegetation. In contrast, Glacier Country and Haast to the south feature a more alpine climate, with temperate rainforests near sea level. Regardless of when you visit, you’ll find unique beauty and adventure waiting for you!

The roads on the West Coast offer a breathtaking mix of stunning scenery and unique driving experiences. General Tips
By keeping these road safety tips in mind, you can enjoy a safe and memorable adventure through the stunning West Coast!
While the West Coast is a remote and less populated region, you'll find plenty of well-maintained public toilets scattered throughout. These facilities are conveniently located along main roads and in popular tourist spots, ensuring you have easy access during your journey.
Whitebait is a West Coast icon and a beloved delicacy, available all year round but fished only once a year during the season from September to October. This small, transparent juvenile fish, primarily the young of the native inanga, is a culinary highlight in the region.
You’ll find various delicious ways to enjoy whitebait throughout the West Coast, from traditional fritters to other local specialties like whitebait pizza. Tasting this treat is a must during your West Coast holiday!
You might have heard of sandflies—those tiny little insects that can turn a pleasant walk into an itchy adventure. While they’re not dangerous, their bites can be quite irritating. Think of sandflies as nature’s way of reminding you to bring insect repellent on your outdoor adventures, especially in coastal and wetland areas. So, if you start seeing them around you, just remember—they’re just trying to say hello (albeit in a very annoying way)!
When it comes to packing for your adventure on the West Coast, dressing appropriately is key! While the region is known for its rain, the flip side is that if you’re prepared, the weather doesn’t have to hold you back. A good waterproof jacket and sturdy footwear can make all the difference, allowing you to enjoy the great outdoors regardless of the weather.
For hiking, it’s essential to wear appropriate gear. We have some fantastic trails, and comfortable, supportive shoes are a must. Don’t forget to pack snacks and extra layers, especially for longer hikes—being well-prepared makes your experience much more enjoyable.
