How many days should I plan for traveling on the West Coast?

It depends on how much you want to see and which way you are traveling from.

The region is full of wonders from north to south, covering a distance similar to Wellington to Auckland.

We recommend at least 3 nights, but 5+ days if you want to explore all the way from Haast to Karamea or vice versa.

Is it always raining?

This is our best-kept secret! We do get a lot of rain, but it usually comes in heavy bursts. The region actually has more sunny days than many other parts of New Zealand! Our weather is also a lot more settled in the winter months, offering more sunshine. In contrast, spring tends to be quite wet, especially during 'Whitebait Season'.

Plus, none of the West Coast’s natural wonders would exist without the rain. And since the region stretches 600 km from north to south, the weather can vary significantly.

What is the best way to explore the region?

Self-drive is the best way to experience as much as possible. You can rent a car at Hokitika Airport or Greymouth train station or drive from other parts of the country.

If you would like someone else to do the driving, we also have tour operators like Hokitika Scenic Tours and Explore West Coast offering tours around the West Coast.

What is the best season to visit?

All our wonders, including the glaciers, are accessible year-round! However, summer, from December to February, is the busiest season, attracting visitors eager to explore the stunning landscapes and partake in outdoor activities.

The Northern West Coast, including Karamea, enjoys a subtropical microclimate, providing warmer temperatures and lush vegetation. In contrast, Glacier Country and Haast to the south feature a more alpine climate, with temperate rainforests near sea level. Regardless of when you visit, you’ll find unique beauty and adventure waiting for you!

New Zealand and West Coast experiences four seasons:

  • Spring (September to November) brings mild temperatures, and an abundance of wildlife, including many bird species returning to nest such as the Kōtuku /White Heron and Fiordland Crested Penguins.
  • Summer (December to February) is characterised by warm weather, making it perfect for outdoor adventures and exploring the breathtaking scenery. This is the busiest season on the West Coast.
  • Autumn (March to May) has cooler temperatures and fewer crowds, perfect for a more tranquil experience.
  • Winter (June to August) typically offers clear days and temperatures ranging from 10 to 15°C, making it a great time for those who prefer cooler weather and fewer people around. With more sunshine hours for heli-hikes and kayaking, you can fully appreciate the stunning landscapes.

What is the West Coast known for?

  • Wild landscapes and natural beauty
  • Gold and coal mining history
  • Pounamu and Maori culture and history
  • Hiking, fishing, biking and adventure sports

How are the roads?

The roads on the West Coast offer a breathtaking mix of stunning scenery and unique driving experiences. While many routes are well-maintained, it's important to be mindful of specific features, such as multiple one-lane bridges, and to prioritise safety during wild weather. You'll also find there are no traffic lights anywhere on the West Coast, adding to the region's charm and tranquillity.

Road Conditions

  • Expect winding roads that traverse through breathtaking landscapes, including mountains, forests, and coastal views. These roads are often narrow and can be challenging, so take your time and enjoy the journey.
  • You’ll encounter several one-lane bridges along your travels. Be sure to follow the give-way signs and yield to oncoming traffic. These bridges are part of the charm of the region but require careful navigation.

Road Safety

  • Adhere to posted speed limits, which vary in different areas.
  • Weather can change rapidly. Be prepared for rain, fog, or even snow in winter. Drive cautiously in adverse conditions and adjust your speed accordingly.
  • Watch for wildlife on the roads, particularly at dawn and dusk when animals are most active. Be alert for crossing signs and slow down in areas where wildlife is common.

General Tips

  • Ensure your vehicle has enough fuel, as service stations can be spaced out in remote areas.
  • Take advantage of rest areas to stretch your legs and enjoy the scenery. There are often viewpoints where you can stop for photos.
  • Always carry basic emergency supplies, including water, snacks, and a first aid kit, in case you encounter delays.

By keeping these road safety tips in mind, you can enjoy a safe and memorable adventure through the stunning West Coast!

Are there public toilets available on the roads?

While the West Coast is a remote and less populated region, you'll find plenty of well-maintained public toilets scattered throughout. These facilities are conveniently located along main roads and in popular tourist spots, ensuring you have easy access during your journey.

What is Whitebait?

Whitebait is a West Coast icon and a beloved delicacy, available all year round but fished only once a year during the season from September to October. This small, transparent juvenile fish, primarily the young of the native inanga, is a culinary highlight in the region.

You’ll find various delicious ways to enjoy whitebait throughout the West Coast, from traditional fritters to other local specialties like whitebait pizza. Tasting this treat is a must during your West Coast holiday!

What is a sandfly?

You might have heard of sandflies—those tiny little insects that can turn a pleasant walk into an itchy adventure. While they’re not dangerous, their bites can be quite irritating. Think of sandflies as nature’s way of reminding you to bring insect repellent on your outdoor adventures, especially in coastal and wetland areas. So, if you start seeing them around you, just remember—they’re just trying to say hello (albeit in a very annoying way)!

What to pack?

When it comes to packing for your adventure on the West Coast, dressing appropriately is key! While the region is known for its rain, the flip side is that if you’re prepared, the weather doesn’t have to hold you back. A good waterproof jacket and sturdy footwear can make all the difference, allowing you to enjoy the great outdoors regardless of the weather.

For hiking, it’s essential to wear appropriate gear. We have some fantastic trails, and comfortable, supportive shoes are a must. Don’t forget to pack snacks and extra layers, especially for longer hikes—being well-prepared makes your experience much more enjoyable.
