Travel Tips

Top things to know before your trip to the West Coast

1. Have enough time

The West Coast region, stretching from north to south on the South Island, covers about the same distance as the trip from Wellington to Auckland. So, make sure you allow plenty of time to get the most out of your West Coast adventure! There’s no rush here.

Although you won’t be stuck in traffic (we don’t even have traffic lights!), you’ll be surrounded by stunning scenery and countless viewpoints that will tempt you to stop and take it all in. Trust me, you won’t be able to resist pulling over for a quick photo op or just to soak up the views. Each stop offers something special, so take your time and enjoy the journey—there’s a lot to see and experience along the way!

2. plan how you will get around

Even though the West Coast is one of the most remote regions in New Zealand, you’ll have a good number of options for getting here and getting around.

Exploring the area by car is definitely the best way to take in all it has to offer. The West Coast makes for an amazing road trip destination and is easily accessible from Christchurch on the East Coast, Nelson from the North, and Wanaka from the South.

Our main airport is in Hokitika, where you can catch daily flights from Christchurch with Air New Zealand, and you can pick up your rental car right at the airport. There are also airports in Westport and Karamea.

Plus, there’s a train connection from Christchurch with Great Journeys. The TranzAlpine is considered one of the most scenic train journeys in the world! You can grab your rental car at the Greymouth train station.

Tour options are available if you prefer not to self-drive.

Please note that the West Coast doesn't have an extensive public transport system, so planning ahead is a great way to ensure you don't miss anything.
