Everyone has their own favorite time to visit the West Coast! Some enjoy the less crowded autumn and spring season, others appreciate the clear blue skies of winter, while many love the warmth of summer. All our West Coast must-see destinations are accessible year-round, even the icy glaciers!
The Northern West Coast, including Karamea, enjoys a subtropical microclimate, providing warmer temperatures and lush vegetation. In contrast, Glacier Country and Haast to the south feature a more alpine climate, with temperate rainforests near sea level.
Spring (September to November) brings mild temperatures, nighttime rainfall, and an abundance of wildlife, including many bird species returning to nest.
Summer (December to February) is characterised by warm weather, making it perfect for outdoor adventures and exploring the breathtaking scenery. This is the busiest season on the West Coast.
Autumn (March to May) has cooler temperatures and fewer crowds, perfect for a more tranquil experience.
Winter (June to August) typically offers clear days and temperatures ranging from 10 to 15°C, making it a great time for those who prefer cooler weather and fewer people around. There is no snowfall on the ground, except for some alpine roads like Arthur’s Pass and Haast Pass.
Yes, the West Coast is the wettest region in New Zealand, BUT it actually has more sunny days than many other regions in the country. How is that possible? Well, when it rains here, it pours. Usually, you can experience very heavy rain especially at night, followed by a sunny day to explore the region. After all, we wouldn’t have our stunning rainforests and many other natural wonders without the rain!
Regardless of when you visit, you’ll find unique beauty and adventure waiting for you!
