Christchurch Airport Tourism and Hospitality Award Finalist 2018: West Coast Wildlife Centre

Christchurch Airport Tourism and Hospitality Award Finalist

West Coast Wildlife Centre

A modern, privately owned and innovative visitor attraction occupying an extensive location in Franz Josef. With just five species of kiwi to be found in NZ, the rarest is called the rowi - with less than 450 alive today. Having hatched 288 rowi kiwi to date and 115 Haast tokoeka (403 kiwi in total) - this is the most successful kiwi hatching facility in the South Island and second largest kiwi hatching facility in NZ.

Thanks to our partnership with the Department of Conservation and ongoing support from Te Rūnaka o Makaawhio, guests are guaranteed to see live kiwi - heading back into the wild.

You will also discover our brand new $250,000 Tuatara Encounter – more unique, threatened and endemic New Zealand wildlife.

This award-winning indoor facility presents opportunities to better understand our West Coast wildlife, interactive glacier attractions, films and storytelling areas. Wheelchair friendly and easy single level attraction entry, entertains all ages and abilities.

Unique to the West Coast and committed to the highest environmental values and standards, we deliver a powerful and memorable experience to visitors in a fun, exciting, informative and commercially-successful way.
