West Coast economic development priorities workshop

Development West Coast (DWC) is currently facilitating the development of a Tai Poutini West Coast Economic Development Strategy.

To ensure there is a well-represented view of the region, the public has been asked to share their views on economic development. An online survey was conducted with 389 responses. This was followed by a youth workshop attended by students from five West Coast High Schools. DWC facilitated a further session in June with 84 participants.

Building on from this engagement, DWC facilitated another session at Shantytown on Tuesday with close to 100 participants.

Attendees at the workshop included Councils, Mayors, industry, youth and agency representatives.

The objective of the workshop was to develop a vision for the West Coast economy for beyond 2050 and the short- and medium-term priorities to get there.

DWC Economic Development Manager Jo Birnie said there was great engagement confirming the vision for the next 30 years.

“The focus now is to translate the input into key actionable priorities for the West Coast to develop as a prosperous resilient region.”
