We're recruiting - Destination and Tourism Manager

01 June 2024
DWC is looking for a Destination and Tourism Manager to join its team.

  • Drive sustainable visitor growth in a region of untamed natural wilderness
  • Strengthen the region’s destination and tourism profile
  • Passion for tourism and its impact on communities

About the Organisation:

Development West Coast (DWC) is the regional economic development agency and regional tourism organisation for the West Coast Te Tai Poutini region. DWC's objectives are to promote employment opportunities and generate sustainable economic benefits for the West Coast by investing in regional businesses and development projects that will benefit the West Coast now and in the future.

About The Role:

The Destination and Tourism Manager oversees all aspects of regional tourism and destination management. This role is pivotal in developing, implementing, and monitoring strategies that enhance the region’s tourism and destination profile, drive sustainable visitor growth, and support local economic development.

Tourism is an important sector for the West Coast economy, and a contributor to the regional identity and regenerative economy. The visitor economy helps enrich the lives of residents, supports communities to thrive, connects, and protects the region’s cultural heritage, and helps to regenerate natural assets.

Based in Greymouth, the role involves regular travel domestically and internationally. This is a busy relationship-focussed role, so not much time is spent in the office.

The Manager leads a new team of three. This is a great opportunity for the new manager to step up and make their mark.

Skills & Experience:

As the ideal candidate tourism will be in your blood. Passionate for enhancing visitor experiences, you will actively contribute to the regional identity and economy in a well-managed and sustainable way.

You will think strategically but will be equally happy being hands on with delivery. Highly creative, you will be able to work with limited budgets, developing innovative and relevant initiatives, understanding the key differences between destination marketing and destination management.

Your enthusiasm, energy, and ability to deliver results, will mean you are well respected and well connected within the tourism industry. Skilled at building relationships, you will connect locally and internationally with key stakeholders, establishing and growing your network.

A self-starter, you will be highly motivated, able to manage multiple priorities and identify and eliminate roadblocks if needed.

In addition, you will have:

  • A tertiary qualification in Tourism, Marketing or Business Studies, or equivalent experience.
  • Proven experience in the commercial tourism sector working across diverse geographies and destinations.
  • Experience or understanding of the functions of a Regional Tourism Organisation and Economic Development Agency.
  • In depth knowledge and understanding of New Zealand’s tourism industry, and understanding of the tourism industry programmes, trade events and strategies for tourism marketing, research and development.
  • Excellent communication skills related to oral, written, and other mediums including website, social marketing, community relationship management and database management.
  • Experience working with data and exploring alternative metrics to measure success.

An understanding of the New Zealand brand and global marketing initiatives and international travel distribution channels is desirable.

Benefits:

  • A vehicle is provided
  • Subsidised Health Insurance
  • Critical Illness Insurance
