There are plenty of camping options on the West Coast. You’ll find everything from commercial campgrounds to Motor Caravan Association member sites and Department of Conservation sites around the region.
The West Coast has a lot of campground options, ranging from beachfront campgrounds to those with alpine views.
You can stay at a beach camp like Punakaiki Beach Camp or Gentle Annie Seaside Campground, or enjoy the view of the Southern Alps at the Orange Sheep Campervan Park in Franz Josef.
Low charge, but not free of responsibility—you’ll find responsible camping spots around the region where you can stay in a tent, campervan, or motor vehicle on public land. These sites have minimal or no facilities, such as toilets or showers. Camping in non-self-contained vehicles is only permitted in sanctioned Responsible Camping Sites.
