The unsurpassed views over Lake Brunner and surrounding farmlands from the base of Carew Creek Falls makes this gentle walk one of our best hidden gems.
About
This picturesque 30-meter waterfall is a must-see. Enjoy a leisurely forest walk to its base, where you can relax on large granite boulders and admire the breathtaking view of Lake Brunner.
Carew Creek Falls
- Time: 1 hr return
- Distance: 2 km return
A good track winds up through forest to reach a waterfall on Carew Creek, which descends from Castle Hill, one of the Hohonu Peaks. Immense water-shaped granite boulders make perfect spots for sitting and enjoying a view out over the western end of Lake Brunner from a height of more than 100 m.
Old pipes seen along the track are from a small hydro scheme that once provided power for the Mitchells Hotel (now Lake Brunner Eco Lodge).
Return via the same track.
Getting there: The track starts on Kumara-Inchbonnie Road, about 300 m east of Lake Brunner Eco Lodge.
