Your visit to the West Coast wouldn't be complete without experiencing the Pounamu Pathway in Māwhera/Greymouth. This engaging experience showcases the region's rich Māori culture, history, and West Coast heritage through digital and immersive technology that is surprising, creative, and utterly unique to the West Coast/Te Tai o Poutini.
About
With spectacular architectural designs featuring treasured tribal patterns, master carving and other traditional artforms, the Māwhera Pa celebrates mātauranga (knowledge) and manaakitanga (hospitality) of Poutini Ngāi Tahu (people of the West Coast).
Step inside to be wowed by five themed storytelling whare (houses) flowing through a central ātea (open space). See contemporary, large scale-sculptures and stunning audio-visuals inspired by ancient traditions.
The Pounamu Pathway will consist of four interconnected experience centres — Kawatiri/Westport, Māwhera/Greymouth, Hokitika (Dec 2025) and Awarua/Haast (2025)— each offering a gateway to captivating and emotive visitor experiences.
