Built in 1876 and reopened in 2012, the Theatre Royal Hotel is the West Coast's only remaining restored Miners' Hotel. Boasting six luxurious on-site rooms, a restaurant and bar, this award-winning hotel is truly a sight to behold.
Built in 1876, at the beginning of the Kumara gold rush, the Hotel was the meeting, entertaining and playing place for the miners who had arrived in Kumara, from all around the world. The first owners were Annie and Otto Anderson of Scandinavia and Germany, respectively. Kumara's first Mayor and NZ's longest serving Premier, Richard John Seddon, was often known to take to the stage and sing. After a two year rebuild, the Theatre Royal Hotel is now host to 6 on-site rooms which have all been lovingly and individually decorated, incorporating 1800s décor with 21st Century technology. The Theatre Royal Hotel was voted "Best New/Redeveloped Accommodation 2013" and "Best Country Hotel 2014" at the annual Hospitality NZ Awards for Excellence.
