Welcome West Coast winter break

Ōkārito Trig Walk

Embrace winter and wake up on the West Coast. When snow dusts the mountains, morning mist hovers over the lakes and valleys, and the wind whips up the waves, the West Coast is at its wild best.

There’s so much to like about the West Coast in winter. Make magic moments on magnificent mountains or dramatic, deserted beaches, and experience fascinating adventures with curious wildlife and passionate locals. Top that with cosy stays and hearty fare at welcoming establishments and winter couldn’t get any better.

GETTING HERE: There are many ways to get to the West Coast. From Queenstown, leave the crowds behind to road trip across the spectacular Haast Pass road. From Christchurch, drive over Arthur’s Pass or take the acclaimed TranzAlpine train journey through the Southern Alps. Drive south from Nelson or fly directly into Hokitika from Christchurch.

HAAST TO FOX GLACIER

1 hr 33 min, 121 km

Slow down and ease into West Coast time as you travel the wild windswept coast north from Haast to Fox Glacier. Stretch your legs on the short easy trails at Ship Creek or stop at Bruce Bay / Mahitahi – a tiny settlement on a wild beach 40 km south of Fox Glacier.

Nestled into the foothills of the Southern Alps, Fox Glacier is the smaller of the two Glacier Country towns. For a good view of the giant glacier it’s named after, visit Te Kopikopiko o te Waka — just beyond town, this sculpture represents a giant waka (Māori canoe) pointing the way to the glacier. Or get even closer to the glacier on a guided heli-hike or scenic flight.

Stop for lunch or coffee at Matheson Cafe then take an easy stroll around picture perfect Lake Matheson to see why it’s New Zealand’s most photographed lake. The still waters perfectly reflect the snowy peaks of Aoraki Mt Cook, New Zealand’s highest mountain. Carry on down the road to Gillespies Beach for rugged ocean views, gold mining history and scenic walking tracks.

Winter is a special season in Glacier Country. Days are often still and mild — and, while there’s snow on the mountains, you’re only 20 km from a wilderness beach or a tranquil lake.

Cruisy Franz Josef township is a great base for exploring the glaciers but that’s just the start. Take a hike on ice or a scenic flight. For on the ground adventures, boot up to follow one of many hiking trails or go off-road and learn to drive a quad bike while exploring the dynamic landscapes of the glacier valley. You’ll learn how to drive your trusty vehicle on a range of surfaces from river boulders to muddy forest trails.

FRANZ JOSEF TO ŌKĀRITO

26 min, 28 km

Stay over a second night in Franz Josef to allow time to explore some of the Coast’s lesser known wilderness jewels.

Gorgeous Lake Mapourika — just 10 min north of Franz Josef — is a glacier-created kettle lake that’s equally lovely on a blue sky day or a still winter morning when the mist rises above the mirror waters. Sit back and admire on a scenic boat trip or break a sweat kayaking across the lake. At Whataroa, you can take a unique guided tour into New Zealand’s only breeding colony for the majestic kōtuku / white heron.

A little more off-the-beaten-track, the picturesque coastal village of Ōkārito sits between Ōkārito Lagoon and the Tasman Sea. New Zealand’s largest unmodified wetland is a haven for a multitude of wildlife species. There are mountain-to-sea 360-views from the Ōkarito Trig, kayaks to hire, wildlife tours and outstanding night sky viewing.

ŌKĀRITO TO HOKITIKA

1 hr 43 min, 135 km

From Franz Josef it’s an easy scenic road trip to Hokitika. Stop en route at the old gold mining town of Ross and stretch your legs on the short heritage trail around the hillside where miners sought their fortunes. Pan for gold at the Ross Goldfields Heritage Centre and marvel at the size of the largest gold nugget ever found in New Zealand.

Explore a peaceful rainforest canopy high above Lake Mahinapua, just south of Hokitika, or jump aboard for a cruise into lush rainforest on the scenic waterways. The popular West Coast Wilderness Trail — a multi-day mountain biking and walking route — also runs through here.

The super wide streets in Hokitika are testament to an illustrious past when it was the capital of the goldfields. It’s also a major source of pounamu / NZ greenstone, and is home to many artists’ studios, tasty food joints, excellent accommodations and a long sandy beach made for satisfying wanders. Stay here and allow another day to have a proper look around town.

There are a multitude of scenic sights and activities to see and do from Greymouth. Visit Shantytown — a replica pioneer village full of restored buildings — or drive up the Great Coast Road to Punakaiki to witness the mesmerising power of the Tasman Sea at the famed Punakaiki Pancake Rocks. Contrast that with a tranquil walk through glades of rustling nīkau palms and complete your journey at the amazing new Paparoa Experience — an immersive spectacle that celebrates and explains this special environment.
