The Kawatiri Coastal Trail is due for completion late 2022. Cyclists and walkers can look forward to a 55 km, Grade 2 family friendly heritage trail which will connect the Buller District towns of Westport and Charleston.
The Kawatiri Coastal Trail is a Grade 2, family friendly cycling and walking heritage trail and will eventually connect Carters Beach, Cape Foulwind and Tauranga Bay along the coast from Westport to Charleston.

ABOUT THE KAWATIRI COASTAL TRAIL
The Kawatiri Coastal Trail is a 55 km walking and cycling heritage Trail which will eventually connect Carters Beach, Cape Foulwind and Tauranga Bay along the coast from Westport to Charleston. Once complete the spectacular all seasons Trail can be ridden in either direction, or split into shorter rides to take in the highlights along the way.
Wild West Coast scenery and local history combine to offer visitors a fascinating, leisurely ride. Abundant native flora and fauna, extensive Māori and European history, and rugged coastlines immerse visitors in the region’s cultural and natural heritage. Look out for the Interpretation Panels offering insight into the area’s unique geology and diverse ecology
The Pūwaha Section of the Kawatiri Coastal Trail offers an easy ride through pristine wetlands from Westport to Carters Beach.
